'Jennifer in 'Paradise' was the first ever image to be Photoshopped. The woman in the picture is Jennifer Walters, now Jennifer Knoll, wife of the man who created Photoshop, Thomas Knoll. Since the launch of the software, the image has been constantly used by Adobe to demonstrate the ability of Photoshop and updates to the program.

8)Image of Kim Jong-il

In 2008 it was reported that an image of Kim Jong-il, posing with the North Korean army, was a fake. In the photo, the shadow cast by his calves ran a different direction from that of the soldiers on either side of him, while there are other clues that the North Korean leader wasn't actually there.

9)Two images from North Korea

Two images from North Korea that show a limousine with a portrait of Kim Jong-il leading his funeral procession in Pyongyang. In the top picture released by Kyodo, news agency, a group of men cluster around what looks like a video camera on the left side of the picture. In the bottom picture which was sent directly to Reuters by the North Korean government, the group is missing. Reuters now believes the bottom picture was altered by North Korea. The reason for the apparent photo alteration is unclear, although the doctored image appears slightly "tidier" than the original.

10)James Purnell

In 2007, Culture Secretary James Purnell turned up too late for a photo-shoot to promote a new development at a Tameside hospital. But the Labour MP did not want everyone to know that, so the picture was doctored to look like he had been there with the rest of the group.

The picture showed workers monitoring a bank of 10 giant video screens displaying underwater images of the deadly oil leak. However a spokesman for BP admitted that two screens were actually blank in the original picture and a staff photographer had used Photoshop software to add images.

BP was again involved in an airbrushing row when a photo taken inside a company helicopter appeared to show it flying off the coast near the damaged Deepwater Horizon rig. But it was later shown to be faked after internet bloggers identified several problems with the poorly produced image that contradicted the appearance that it was flying. Among the problems identified included part of a control tower appearing in the top of the top left of the picture, different shades of colours, its pilot holding a pre-flight checklist and its control gauges showing the helicopter’s door and ramp open and its parking brake engaged.

20)The 2005 Christmas image showed the King and Queen seated on a sofa with their then seven grandchildren around them

The problem of getting a large family to pose together was controversially overcome five years ago when Spain's royal household released a Christmas photograph that had been altered with the use of photoshop. The 2005 Christmas image showed the King and Queen seated on a sofa with their then seven grandchildren around them. But it caused some embarrassment when it emerged that it was in fact a composite photograph and had been so obviously altered that Monarch's right leg had been accidentally amputated.
